Congresswoman Lee Receives Honorary Doctrate

Congresswoman Barbara Lee was conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the American Baptist Seminary of the West (ABSW) during its 143rd commencement ceremony last weekend at the Lakeshore Avenue Baptist Church in Oakland.

The organization’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved Congresswoman Lee’s nomination for this distinguished honor.

“I am humbled to receive this honor from the American Baptist Seminary of the West,” said Congresswoman Barbara Lee. “This historic and prestigious institution teaches students to be moral and intellectual leaders in their community, and it was a joy to participate in their commencement ceremony.”

Based in Berkeley, CA, the American Baptist Seminary of the West (ABSW) was founded in 1871 and is the center of Baptist ecumenical theological education in the far western United States. The seminary is affiliated denominationally with the American Baptist Churches in the U.S.A. and the Progressive National Baptist Convention. ABSW admits students from a variety of denominational traditions and unites national and international relationships with over a century of Baptist-related theological education.

“Congresswoman Barbara Lee has honored the faith community with her commitment to the war against the injustices raging in our communities and throughout the world,” said Dr. Paul M. Martin, President and C.E.O, American Baptist Seminary for the West. “The Board of Trustees applauds Congresswoman Lee’s countless efforts in U.S. Congress to address the numerous social justice issues facing our society.”
